25 Years of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act

Wednesday marked 25 years since the assent of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, which affirmed the Crown- Māori Treaty relationship, recognised Māori land as taonga tuku iho, and promoted the retention of our whenua.

This Government will work to empower land-owners, and allow them to unlock the potential of their land to create better business and whānau opportunities, while protecting our vital Māori institutions.

We will ensure any future reforms will be aligned to land-owner aspirations to be active in their whenua.
